how to configure ms messenger

could u please forward any tech tips to configure microsoft messenger through a proxy , I have win xp computer on which i installed proxy+ , now my other compuet win 98 can surf ok , also real player is working after i configured port 1090 , but unable to send / rec e mail ” error smtp server not found ” also unable to access any secure web site , all featers working ok on the win xp pc which is on line. Thanks
