How to encrypt msde 2000 sql db-files

By daniel.mellstrom ·
Is there any way to encrypt msde sql 2000 db-files. I've tried windows xp's own, but it will not allow the sql-engine to access the files at all. I need to protect a field laptop in case it gets stolen. Basically to make sure that nobody can take the harddrive and put into another computer and read the info.

Grateful for any help!!!

Daniel

Encrypting the file itself

by Tony Hopkinson In reply to How to encrypt msde 2000 ...

isn't going to work. Even if you set something up to decrypt then start the engine and then decrypt on stopping, it would never be encrypted while the engine was running.

And you'd want to automate the process....

Encrypt the entire drive should do the job.

Thanks for your answer!
Do you know of any good sofwares around that will do the job. As I mentioned in my question I have tried Windows encryption, but it doesn't allow me to encrypt the drive.

TrueCrypt

is a good open source program for this. There are any number of paid for commercial products to do so. (Sentry 2020, PGP Disk etc).
