    How to get Gmail Backup

To back up Gmail accounts before deactivating them, use Google’s Takeout service. Visit Google Takeout, sign in with the Gmail account you wish to back up and select “Deselect all” to choose only the specific data you need, such as emails. Click “Next step,” choose your preferred file format and delivery method, then click “Create export.” Google will prepare your data and send you a download link. Save this data securely before deactivating the accounts.

Although there are several paid programs to copy mails from gmail.com to a format that’s readable on your PC, another easy way is to enable access via imap in gmail, then in your favorite e-mail program (I would recommend open source Thunderbird) connect to that imap server and copy all files (or a selection of important files) to the local files of Thunderbird.

A backup, by the way, is only useful if there’s an option to restore the original data in gmail. So I wouldn’t call anything mentioned above a “backup”.
