How to get VPN app to coexist with security apps which uses VPN ?

    by gavottetreat03 ·

    Tags: ,

When your VPN Is off, all other VPN are automatically disconnected by your app, and I lost services of other paid apps like Whoscall and Microsoft Defender. I am now unprotected by other paid apps. Would you please suggest?

Example How to get Microsoft Defender app to coexist with apps that provide complementary protection but unfortunately also uses their own VPN?

A VPN works on the internet connection, And then it routes all internet requests through the VPN to the destination. It’s not relevant what app does the request. For one internet connection you can only have one VPN. Using two different VPN’s on the same internet connection won’t work.

Thanks I would prefer VPN drivers cascaded to achieve complementary protection; my use case for apps that unfortunately install their own VPN

      1. VPN protects me from untrusted WiFi

      2. Microsoft Defender scans files like downloads and phishing

      3. Whoscall to screen call and SMS

      4. Adblock app

How would split tunnel achieve above protection?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you tell why you think that Microsoft Defender and an adblocker addon to your browser(s) on Windows and Whoscall on Android or iOS install their own VPN?

OK, I see DefenderEndpoint protection on iOS installs a local (loop-back or pass-through, whatever that means) VPN. It doesn’t route traffic through a remote VPN server.

How do you see it interferes with your other (unknown which one) VPN software so much that one of the two doesn’t work anymore? Did you ask the makers (that is, say, NordVPN, and Microsoft? They know the internals of their product.

Is it possible for Whoscall Auto Web Checker coexist with Microsoft defender and NordVPN?
        I cannot turn it on.
If it cannot coexist, how to compare your web checker capabilities with Microsoft defender and NordVPN?

“Thanks for highlighting this—it’s a real concern when VPN-based apps can’t coexist. Many security apps like Microsoft Defender and Whoscall rely on VPN-based features, so forcing one to disconnect the others can leave users unprotected.

To get your VPN app to coexist with security apps that also use a VPN (like Microsoft Defender or Whoscall), try these steps:

Enable Split Tunneling: If your VPN app supports split tunneling, enable it. This allows specific apps like Microsoft Defender to bypass the VPN while other traffic uses the VPN.

Check App-specific Settings: Look for settings in both your VPN and security apps (like Microsoft Defender) that allow them to coexist or whitelist each other.

Whitelist Trusted Apps: In your VPN’s settings, use the whitelisting feature to allow security apps like Microsoft Defender to work without the VPN.

Use One VPN at a Time: If other methods don’t work, consider switching between the VPN and security apps when necessary.

My use case of paying three not-inexpensive apps but finding by accident they are not working together ; why isn’t this caveat included in ads in developed societies where customer focus is supposed to be the norm not exception?

How to achieve following features which cannot be provided by single app?

On **iOS**, due to Apple’s restrictions, Defender cannot scan for malware but still provides **web protection, phishing alerts, and identity theft monitoring**.
        Jailbreak/Root detection

        VPN
        – Strong security & privacy features.
        – Fast speeds (good for streaming & gaming).
        – Works with Netflix & other streaming services.
        – No-logs policy (audited).

        ## **🔹 Key Features of AdBlock**
✅ **Blocks All Ads** – Removes banners, pop-ups, video ads (even on YouTube).
✅ **Faster Browsing** – Pages load quicker without ads

In your post above your first suggestion to solve the OP’s issue was to use split tunneling.
Why do you ask now it it works?

According to the best of my research, I am not convinced split tunnel would resolve my issue ; but since someone suggested split tunnel, I asked how it would resolve my issue.
I am now at the point of considering when to select which VPN and how without spending excessive time switching. Example is when to switch from default browser Safari for my iOS mobiles to Edge (which supposedly uses Microsoft Defender ) when Excel is the only format available for downloading. Not everyone can afford to have broadband which is the only option I can see to achieve multiple protection via router VPN ( FlashRouter suggestion from someone to Install VPN and Ad blocker on a router. You can pick up an Asus router that you can flash with Merlin on eBay for under £100)
If there’s a better solution, I appreciate your advice!

In reply to I cannot find information that supports split tunnel that would resolve my

VPN is still very time consuming for home users. Apple seems more interested in revenue than delivery because for my case Apple did not attend to negatives of Apple community and technical support. For years Apple Store VPN vendors advertise features. I paid expensive VPN recommended by VPN community but years-long issues doesn’t get support from Apple (community nor Technical support) other than not using VPN. This boosts Telecom companies revenue because I am tempted to switch to mobile data. Not only does this lead to less utilisation of government services providing free WiFi but I suspect telecom companies use mobile communications for marketing purposes which is also privacy concerns.

I still need to manually setting for different situations. Apple Store and app like Reddits do not show information until I degrade VPN from dedicated IP and most secure protocol. This is more required on 5 years old model like iPhone SE2. I believe you advertise low resource requirement but iPhone to 13 Pro still share lesser degree of same problem IOS 18.5. I have been waiting for easier switching of profile settings such as iPhone shortcut action and your APP remember setting for different situations

Is it possible to get VPN status via shortcut? Both Action and Toolbox Pro do not output results from VPN App. Their actions just open VPN App (I am not allowed to post name of App here) but unfortunately it just show looping screen.
Reason: iPhone status bar can be misleading
          1. VPN icon often missing if connected.
          2. Mobile data is incorrectly shown for WiFi connection.
          2. If VPN shown there’s no information on which VPN is being connected

AirDrop doesn’t work for devices of same Apple ID with local network discovery. Why should I cannot airdrop to myself? IOS

I am finding security apps need to install VPN. If VPN is shown on status bar, without going to iPhone settings I don’t know if it’s security or VPN app.
