How to install printers through AD?

By TechTony ·
We are running a W2000 domain with AD. We have new printers installed and shared that we would like to "push" out to all employees. I can't find a way to do this. Do I need to do this through a script or isn't there any easier way through AD?
Thanks!

IT DEPENDS

If your printer server is running Windows 2000, the share is automatically listed in the AD. A user has only to browse in the directory and click the printer to use it. Or he/she may click the start, settings, printer then click the add printer, then choose network and browse the AD for the printer.

If the print server is not W2K, the printer may be published to the AD by right clicking Active Directory Users and Computers, choose domain or domain controllers (inasmuch as you want it deployed to all of the users of the domain), click New, then Click Printer then type the path to the share. If you want it assigned to a particular OU, then right click the OU and do the same process, as above. Give me some feedback if this fix helps you.

Publishing

Thanks for the info but I have no problems with publishing a printer. Out of a 100 users I don't have time to answer questions on how to install printers from the XP add printer wizard. I was hoping there was a simpler way to install it for them.

Not all that simple

by leehellcat In reply to Publishing

This is not all that simple, but could save you plenty of time in the future.

The link below shows how to extend the Active Directory Schema to include roll out of printers :

Hope it helps
