How to install SimplyMEPIS or KUBUNTU ?

Can one download a free version & install it on a CD to be run off the CD?

Yes, both can be easily download and both have a Live version

so you can run them off the disc. To run the live version you simply put it in and boot from the disc. They also have an icon if you choose to install after using it as a live disc for a while.

You can get the Kubuntu discs free from:

www.kubuntu.org

I prefer Kubuntu 8.04 as it uses KDE 3.5 the latest Kubuntu 9.04 uses KDE 4 which I don't like. MepisLinux still uses KDE 3 or 3.5 and is available from:

www.mepis.org

With any Linux you need to download for either the 32 bit or 64 bit version, depending upon the hardware of your system.

I'm still not sure how to download and install on a CD. I downloaded & tried to install on a CD but it didn't work. I installed instead on a backup disk and that didn't work either.
Who is screwed up, me or my computer?:-(

burning software and see if they have a wizard marked ISO Burn or ISO Copy or Make a CD from ISO - then simple select the downloaded file and follow the prompts.

Apart from that there are a number of organisations that will send you pre burnt CDs or DVDs for little more than postage plus CD cost. Check these URLs
