How to intro w2k server into nt4 domain

I currently have an NT4 domain. That includes 1 PDC and 1 BDC and several member servers. My goal is to replace my PDC with a new server running W2K. The process I was going to follow was to install W2K on the new server and join the Domain as a member server. Once this is done do I then just install active directory to make the server my new Domain Controller? If so what happens when I remove my PDC? Do the BDC machines then try to replicate with active directory?

You MUST upgrade your PDC first. If you want the new box to act as the PDC emulator, then follow this procedure.
Built the box as a NT BDC.
      Promote it to PDC status.
Upgrade the PDC to W2K and install AD.

BDC’s know nothing of active directory. They can only replicate with the PDC, or in the case of W2K, the PDC emulator.

Make sure you once you’ve got you NT4 PDC ready to upgrade you take your BDC offline, and leave it offline till your 2K box is working. That way if things go a little awry you can bring your BDC online and premote it, with all the user accounts intact.
