First: Does your company have any standards that might apply to this. In that case, you will NEED to consult with them.

If not, then the correct answer is "it depends".

Do you have an Internet connection at work? At home? If "yes" & "yes", then you should be able to setup a connection between the 2 computers. Use some sort of "remote control" software like PC Anywhere or VNC (this one's "free" at www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/).

If you don't have Internet connections, then you can setup your work PC as a "RAS Server" with a modem, and just dial-in from home. Again, a remote control software package will let you use your work PC from your home PC.

There are other ways. There are "better" ways. Something like I described is cheap and simple. But it is not very secure!

Your real concern needs to be how to keep the connection secure. In particular, you need to consider securing the connection into your work computer, the data and applications on your work computer, and the connection from your work computer to the network at work.

So much of the details depend on the particulars of the situation, but perhaps these will give you ideas.

Part of the answer depends on the degree sophistication you need. If you merely need to exchange files and email, PC Anywhere or GoToMyComputer.com will work.
Another factor in the version of Operating System software you?re using.
As an example, here?s a Microsoft article:
(Type the Q number into the ?For solutions containing...? box at support.microsoft.com)
Configure Win2000 Pro to Win2000 Pro VPN Connections
