How to make word 2003 the default for .doc in Vista

By halreads ·
Have a Vista machine and installed Office 2003. When I attempt to open .doc files the machine defaults to Wordpad. Tried all the usual efforts to associate Word 2003 with .doc files to no avail. Is there a fix?

There is only ONE "usual" way to associate a program with a file type. So, what are all the "usual" ways that you tried?

Also, have you tried detect and repair? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? Have you applied ALL of the service packs for Office?

Office 2003 is known to have problems running on Vista. Have you searched Microsoft for any knowledgebase article related to your specific problem?

To make Word 2003 the default for .doc, open Word 2003, click on Help, then Detect and Repair.

To make Word 2007 the default, open Word 2007, click the Office Button, then click Word Options, then click Diagnose.
