How To open document on a Remote Server

By New England Wire ·
I know the url of a document I want to read with my web app. However, I do not know what method to use to open an document given a URL. Is there a method in Java or JavaScript or VB or VBScript that will accomplish what I am talking about.

What kind of documents are you trying to open?

Most docuemts can be opened (in the browser) by setting the HREF attribute of the anchor (<A&gt tag.

IE is able to open Office documents (Word, Excel...) in this manner.

Ah! Server side...
I wrote a DLL using the MSInet.ocx (Internet Transfer Control) which grabs content from another site and returns the page data as a string.

If anyone is interested in the code, I'd be happy to send it to you.

I want to be able to write code to read the document into the server app. At that point I am going to parse the file and output the appropriate images to the browser.

Something like.

strFileContents = ReadFile(URL)
If FindWord("CLOUD", strFileContents) Then
Response.Write "<img src = 'Clouds.gif'>"
End If

I am after a way to read a file in a server side script but instead of reading a local file, I wan't to Open and read a file on a remote server.
