How to re-install Internet Explorer

By tchieng ·
I think my Internet Explorer configuration is corrupted somewhere. Everytime it tries to open another window by clicking on a link, it gets stuck doing it. I have the latest version with all the patches and I want to do a re-install to overwrite its files, but ie6setup won't let me. How can I do this without re-installing the whole XP Operating System?

If you have a bummed IE, you can run a repair on it from the Add/Remove Programs applet. I know that XP is a little different than what I use but I think you should still have an ADD/Removes Programs icon in the control panel. Scroll down the list of installed programs until you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and click on the Remove button. This will open a new window with Remove or Repair Damaged files option.

If you repair IE and still get blank windows opening, you may have Java script diabled.
From inside Internet Explorer, go to the TOOLS menu and select Internet Options. When the OPTIONS panel opens, select the Advanced tab and scroll down to the Java Sun heading and place a check in the checkbox.

If you DO NOT have a Java section in your Advanced menu, you can download SUNS java console from here:

Nope. IE is not listed under Add/Remove Programs. I have Sun's Java run-time installed, played with a few IE settings, and even reset all IE settings to default and nothing works. I still get a blank page when clicking on a link that will launch another window. I would hate to re-install the OS, updates, and re-install all applications and games. I'm using Netscape 7.1 as an alternate until someone can help me.

Thanks. Try again...

Method 1: Reinstall or Repair Windows XP
To repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP, complete the following procedure while you are logged on as an administrator:
Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.

Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media.
Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.

To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:

Method 2: Edit the Registry and Install Internet Explorer 6

To avoid this error message and reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps:
While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
