How to remove Adware (virus like software)

By gbxtr ·
XP Pro machine resets its browser home page to http://www.search-space.com Even after removing entries from the registry and resetting the home page and browser settings it comes back.

Also, I cannot search for files on the hard drive, or use a search engine such as yahoo without being re-directed to metasearch.

I have scanned the machine with NAV8.1 with no virus found (dats are up to date). Their help desk says it is "adware" that is causing the problem, and their next software update will be able to catch the problem.

Has anyone else run into this, and how did you fix it???

Thanks in advance,
Greg

use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware both free. Do a search on google for both. Also download spywareblaster to make sure adware/malware not get installed on your computer.

goto www.lavasoftusa.com

Download Adaware.

Install it

Update it

Customize it - Put green checkmarks in all the boxes and select all local hard drives

Run it

When it is done, you will find a list of malicous items in your computer. Right click on one of those items and click "SELECT ALL OBJECTS"

Hit next.

Close, Reboot. Do one more time.

In addition to AdAware or Spybot, you may need to run system file checker to replace corrupted system files.

From the run box, type in sfc
After running sfc, re-boot the PC.
While the PC is booting up, insert your Windows XP CD into your CD drive.

I have installed Ad-aware from PCWorld.com and it found many files. I've cleaned them all off, and am able to use other search engines now (yahoo, google, etc.) but everytime I restart a browser I still am re-directed to search-space.com. Also I still cannot search for files on the hard drive.

After the restart of every browser session, I run another scan and keep finding infected files with Ad-aware.

I've un-installed Ad-aware, and will install Spybot and see if it will do a better job for me.

If any body has more ideas, please send them.

Thanks,
Greg

What you are experiencing could be the 'parasite' problem which you may or may not have installed merely by entering a site and accepting something unknowingly. Go to this website and have your system checked. It's free and harmless. If you have a parasite, it will tell you the name of it. You select the name identified on the left and follow the directions for removal. After removing the parasite, do it again since more than one is possible. Do this until they report all parasites have been removed.

Keep the link. You may need it again someday.

The problem ended up getting fixed by CWS Shredder. I found a link on another forum that lead me to this software. Ad-aware and spybot helped, but never fixed the entire problem. As soon as CWS was loaded and updated it found the remaining infected files.

Thanks for all you help. If you ever come across this problem, look for the CWS Shredder software.
