How to reset passcode for laptop.

I can't get into my laptop because I forgot my password. Please help. I don't want to reformat it and lose all my existing files.

Is it the bios password or the windows logon password?

Softwares

There are a few softwares you can download and run them when booting and reset your password.
Don't remember the names exactly but you can sure google them.
