The best advice is to take a look at the Microsoft document 'Disaster Recovery for Microosft Exchange 2000 Server' -

I am still confused with certains steps in Microsoft's whitepaper and there are no instructions for setting up a test restore.

This can be a long, complicated procedure that is not conducive to this forum for answering (if you are looking for a step-by-step). Restore of a server (disaster recovery usually spans an entire chapter (or more) in most references. A good place to start is the Exchange 2000 Reference Kit.

Two more references that I like are "Exchange 2000 Server 24seven" published by Sybex, and "Exchange 2000 Server OnSite" published by the Coriolis Group.

I'm not trying to put you off using this site to get answers to specific questions, but a question as complicated as yours won't get very thorough answers here (not enough space).

To get started do the following:

1. install a parallel AD environment. Ensure that it stays separate from the production.

2. Install Exchange 2000 in the parallel environment. Keep the same org an dadmin group names, server name does not matter.

3. Use the same Service packs and hotfixes used in the production.
