How to shade alternate lines in Excel

By nareimann ·
You just published a newsletter telling how to do this in Access. I have occasionally been wanting to do this with an Excel spreadsheet, but have only been able to use the Format/AutoFormat feature and select one that uses alternate line shading. Am I missing something, or is this harder to do? I have searched thru your Technical Q&A, but didn't find what I want.

Hello...

You can do this easily in Excel like this:

1. Select row #2 by clicking on the row header at the left side of the page. Shade it as you wish.

2. Select two rows, row #1 (not shaded), and row #2 (shaded). Then right click and choose Copy.

3. Select as many pairs of rows below row #2 that you want to have alternately shaded. For example, rows #3 through #10.

4. Here's the rabbit: Right click and choose "Paste Special". In the "Paste Special" dialog, choose "Formats" and click OK. Voila!

Enjoy!

You need to use conditional formatting.
use the help in Excel to get instructins on how to set conditional formatting. you will want to use the if function and check the row number for odd or even if you want to alternate rows. for five rows of one color and five of the next, take the row number and round divided by five then check odd or even on that number. I know this is an incomplete answer but entering "conditional formatting" into excel help's search willget you the rest of the answer.
