You load it onto the computer

And then open whatever program you need. Most of the commonly used ones are included by default depending on the Distribution you chose to use.

As for which is best this all depends on your need and experience level though you can try a Live Linux which runs off a CD/DVD and doesn't touch the internal HDD in the computer if you want to experience quite a few. You can download one or more from here

http://livecdlist .com/

Or if you want to know which may suit your needs better you can do a bit of investigation on Distro Watch here

Just remember to remove the space from between the Domain Name and the .COM.

try virtualizing it

by databaseben In reply to How to use linux opearati ...

one of the easiest and safer methods to run a secondary operating system is to "virtualize" it.

you can install virtual pc or virtual box in windows, then install the secondary operating system (any-kind and as many as you want) in the virtual box or virtual pc program.

then you can actually launch the secondary operating system via the desktop and install programs in the secondary operating system, like browsers designed for linux.

there are however, some limitations by virtualizing an operating system, which are that the main operating system (and not the virtualized o.s) has absolute control over the hardware drivers. but this is a minor problem that doesn't interfere with trying out and using an alternative o.s.

also, if you make a mistake installing the secondary o.s., you can simply delete it or uninstall it as if it were just a regular program and reinstall it again without crashing your main system.

if by chance you find the alternative o.s. highly appealing, then you might want to do a full install of it on a secondary hard drive so that you can boot to it and give it access to your hardware.

Not for this particular person...their eyes probably just glazed over.
Judging from the question, it's pretty easy to conclude that the OP
is not proficient with computers, software, operating systems, etc.
In this instance, the "Live CD" or maybe a "Live USB thunbdrive"
would be a better recommendation.

You mean just the OS, nothing more? Not even a command interpreter?

by Slayer_ In reply to How to use linux opearati ...

What do you plan to do with that? Roll your own system?
