htaccess buggered. Help, if you can please

By Lynnzer ·
I recently applied a security certificate to my site to make it https.
It is showing as valid and installed OK but I had to change .htaccess to redirect the http to the https.
Since then I've had a real problem.
1st off, what code shpould I have put onto the new htaccess file? 2nd is where in **** this file has to reside, and 3rd, I have another site running from the same server (link removed by moderator) and on a different directory. This doesn't have htaccess in the directory.
I have tried putting htaccess in both the site root and in the site directory to no avail.
I get error messages mainly about too many redirects.
Any help I can get would be fantastic as UK2 seems to take forever to get back to me from their support contacts.
