I am just beginning to take classes at itt tech for system networking.

By comicbooktheif ·

In March, I will begin taking classes at ITT Tech for systems networking. I was thinking it would be a good idea to ask if anybody, with experience would like to mentor me and give advice for real world working situations. Also, i would like to know which areas i should focus on the most?

Thank You,

A man tryin to make it

Watch out for the hype!

Every piece of software ships with bugs.

You as a sysadmin will need to cut through the lies and BS of the marketing machines that try to get you to use their products.

I have been in this biz for over 20 years and the biggest issue is whether or not the stuff works straight out the box without a whole lot of patching and tweaking. It has been my experience that the majority of the time the answer is ?NO?.

M$, Novell, Veritas, Computer Associates, Cisco, etc, all of them ship buggy product just to get it out the door. You as the tech person will need to get a feel for the extent of the exaggerated claims that the companies make.

To sum it up, ?Watch out for the hype?.

One other thing...

"Dot oh!" which rhymes with "Oh no!" is something to remember when dealing with new product releases.

If you're not familiar with what this means now,you will if you stay in this biz long enough.
