I have noticed that after installing windows updates, I can no longer save pictures from the internet as jpegs, only as bitmaps. When I right click on the picture and pick "save as", my only choice as far as file types is as an untitled bitmap eventhough I am trying to save a named jpeg. Why did this happen and can I fix it so I can save jpegs again?

Some program has hi-jacked the jpg file association.
In Windows Explorer, click on tools, folder options, and the file type tab. Look through the file types for jpeg or jpg. When you find one, click on the listing, and click on edit to see whatprogram is being used to open the image. If the program used to open the jpg is either one you do-not recognize, not IE, or not the program that you want to use to open jpg files, you should be able to delete the file association altogether.
Youcan then open up the imaging program that you use to view/edit jpgs with, and see if there is an option in settings or preferences to associate the program with jpg files.
Otherwise, you can create a new file association for jpg files. There aregeneral guidelines for file associations posted on most of the help sites. www.pcnineoneone.com www.annoyances.org are just a couple
I have also run across bad file associations in the registry. If the file association does not show up in file types, or you cannot add jpg because it is already in use, then the file association is in the registry. Unless you are familier with using regedit, I would recommend that you not attempt to manually correct the problem in the registry. It is very easy to disable your PC entirely if you edit or delete the wrong key in the registry.
The problem is not with the associations. I can still edit the jpegs with the right program, I cannot save the wallpapers as a jpeg. Ususally when you save, you are given a list of file types. I can only save as a .bmp file.
