I can't see the Task Manager Window when I initiate the commands.

By wats679 ·
I'm running Win XP SP3. I can't see the Task Manager Window when I initiate the commands.

Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) or any other method to activate Task Manager only brings the icon in system tray and on the task bar. Clicking on both icons does not render the Task Manager Window to show all the processes etc.

However, if I right click on the Task Manager icon in the system tray, it gives me Close and Always On Top, with Always On Top ticked.
On the Task Bar, only the computer icon with green screen is displayed, no Text name like, Task Manager... ie. icon without label.
If I hover the mouse over the TM icon in the system tray, CPU Usage: 14% displayed.
I have already downloaded the Microsoft Fix it - ATS, nothing changes.
I have MSSE & McAfee AV running and no viruses found.
I do have WinXP SP2 cd, but I'm not sure if that will be a viable option as I have SP3 updated on my PC.

Please help. Thank you.

I've seen this happen once

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to I can't see the Task Mana ...

With a Games Machine where one of the games killed the ability of the Task Manager to run. I've also seen it another time on a business system where a Installed Program did the same thing.

When you log on what screen do you get here?

If it's not the Original Log On Screen but a smaller version of it there is something installed that has stopped Task Manager running so I suppose the obvious thing to ask is what software do you have installed?

well, i don't know which program triggered it the fault, as I had been installing quite a few programs before I realized the TM didn't work.
However, after using Microsoft's Process Explorer to view my processes for the last 2 days, I checked again today for Task Manager and it came up alright.
Thanks Col for your help:)
