I messed with some sort of network connection thing and cant login

EDIT: I now have access to the computer and the old domain name was CORP. Will system restore do any good?

Also what is the easiest way to transfer all of my old user data (cookies favorites desktop etc) to the admin or new username?

Is it theoretically possible to fix this on my own and if so how.

It would also be nice if you would leave your personal bias out of the reply. The last thing I need is your opinion on how I am a spoiled brat and games don't belong on work PC's and blah blah blah. It's unnecessary and not helping.

Thanks in advance for any help. It's much appreciated.

Also do I need to be near some sort of wireless connection when changing the domain name for it to register? Such as her office building?

Okay so I use my mothers work laptop. I was trying to connect it to a friends desktop pc via ethernet cable to transfer an ISO of the game The Witcher to his PC as I do not have a dual layer dvd-rw so I couldnt burn it. I messed with something that said this computer is not for a business it is for home use while screwing with the netweork stuff trying to get the PC's connected.

The screen had 2 selections. "This computer is connected to a business network" and "home use not connected to a business" or some **** like that.

Now when I log in it looks like the normal xp pro login. It used to have several names in a drop down list on the username area. One I believe was "MICorp" or something and the password was Sm8661. Now the default usename is juat smckee and the password doesnt work anymore.

I am using xp pro. Please help me

I am so fucked if I dont get this corrected. If I could just log in I know I could change the settings back but I cant. I have been up all night trying to fix this.

My mother lets me use the PC as a priviledge. I am currently jobless due to an illness and I sit at home all day playing games on the PC. This priviledge will be gone if I cant get this fixed asap. Please help me

The priveledge will be gone? We'll that's your problem!

by ManiacMan In reply to I messed with some sort o ...

Because you could have cost your mom her job by tampering with company owned equipment that should not be used for games. If your mom loses her job over this, you'll know why. I suggest you grow up, tell your mom that you messed up her laptop, and then have her approach her IT dept to have them correct the problem, but realize that tampering with company owned equipment is grounds for termination in many corporations. Time to face the music and own up to your irresponsible behavior.

Thats the point

My mother is in no risk of losing her job. My main concern is not inconveniencing her as she is a department head for a nation homebuilder. Ontop of her 60 hour work weeks she takes me to MD Anderson Cancer Center 10 days of every month for chemotherapy as well as many other treatments.

She allows me use of this PC because our home was burglarized recently and mine is gone. She has enough on her plate as it is without me adding to it.

I thank you for your less than constructive and more than rude reply.

If anyone could please help me with this situation it would be much appreciated.

A few things

by Bizzo In reply to I messed with some sort o ...

You screwed your mums pc because you were illegally copying games, nice, and thanks for the admission.

Edit your post so it doesn't have your mums id, password and name.

Your mum might have another username/password that works, tell her what you've done, take it on the chin, it might not be as bad as you think.

If it's her work laptop, it might just be that you've taken it out of the domain and so the password won't work. If she takes it back to work they should be able to fix it.

Domain

by Smash_Devour In reply to A few things

I did change the domain by mistake. Is it possible to change it back?

I am not illegally copying games my friend. I am backing them up on a larger HDD than whats on my laptop as newer games are quite large. How is that illegal?

OK

by Bizzo In reply to Domain

Let's forget about the game thing ;-)

In the login, you should have boxes for username, password and domain (might be labelled as "log on to"). If the domain one isn't there, click the options button.
And then you should be able to select the domain from there. If it isn't in the list, then you will need to rejoin the domain, I think you can only do this by being attached the her work network.

Eh whatever...

by Smash_Devour In reply to OK

Downloading a Winternals boot disk as I type this so all should be well in just a few minutes. I didn't want to resort to that but I guess its my only option at this point.

One other question please :)

by Smash_Devour In reply to Also

I have alot of files I need to transfer from the laptop to the desktop.

All I have is an Ethernet cable, no router. I was trying to set up a a p2p (or PnP) connection between the 2 machines earlier to transfer files between them.

Basically what I did was go to the network connection Properties->TCP/IP changed the IP's to 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as well as the one below the IP to 250.250.250.0 on both.

I was able to open a command prompt and ping the other machine from both sides but was stille unable to transfer files.

What am I doing wrong?

If you...

by scott_heath In reply to One other question please ...

..changed the domain name, you will need to have her take it to work and get it fixed no matter what since you won't be able to rejoin it yourself.

Just own up for what happened and stop messing with it. BTW, the ERD disk you are referring to is no longer sold, so I assume you are downloading it illegally.

Also, you need a crossover cable to connect to PCs directly NIC to NIC.

Domain

by rahouseholder In reply to I messed with some sort o ...

It sounds like you removed it from a domain and made it part of a workgroup. She will have to take it to her company's IT department to get it joined back to the domain. I suggest that you do not attempt anything else with the laptop as it may cause more issues for your mother at her work.
