I need help installing Linksys

There are two methods to install the Linksys EtherFast Linux driver.

Installation Procedure for Monolithic Kernel
--------------------------------------------
Use the second one, it will be better for you, if you want/need this method, email me.

Installation Procedure for Modular Kernel
-----------------------------------------
1. Compile tulip.c.

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c

2. Copy tulip.o into the latest kernel's modules.

cp tulip.o /lib/modules/2.0.XX/net/tulip.o

3. Update kernel's module dependencies.

/sbin/depmod -a

4. Add the following in /etc/conf.modules.

alias eth0 tulip

5. Reboot the system.

NOTE: The latest testing version of the driver should compile with all 1.2.*, 1.3.* development, 2.0.* and 2.1.* kernels.

If you need the tulip.c file, email me to CyberAyuda@aol.com

Don't wait for more answers from other peoples, because no one will spend time for 5 points.

Answer #1 should work. If it doesn't, just go into linuxconf and tell it you have a NE2000 compatible NIC. I have a linksys PCMCIA nic for my laptop and the NE2000 compatible works fine.

You will have to configure it after your load, make sure you pick a networking kernel as you didn't tell which flavor of linux you are using. Then you can try to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and look for Tulip. I saw a DEC chipset.. but wonder if its the same. I understand that the driver is available, you may need to recompile your kernel there is a driver in my release under /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.c that I know supports your card...

I would try turning on the module (uncomment it) first... and watch it boot. You'll see it trying to detect the card. If that fails you need to do a kernel rebuild (which you should do anyway to streamline your system). the directions to do that are in you "HOWTO" docs on your CD.

Good Luck! email me if you have any questions...

I use linksys all the time. What you have to do is use the dos utility that it comes with and turn off the plug and play mode on the card. Then just use the ne2000 compatible drivers that come with 99% of linux distributions. It should detect it just fine.
