I Performed an in-place upgrade

By SMILEYDEESJAYS ·
Hello,
I have a fresh install of windows XP home with sp3 installed, last week I had windows update install the sasser worm removal tool and when I restarted my computer it wouldn't boot up at all. It would go straight to windows black safemode and last known good configuration screen. None of those options worked, safemode wouldn't load either. It would just go to the windows xp screen blink blue screen with an error message for about 1 second. So I used my XP installation cd to perform an in-place upgrade. Everything looks fine and works great only now I can't access windows update at all and none of the updates not even sp3 shows in add remove programs, it's as if I've never been to windows update. I do know I'm supposed to reinstall them only can't I get on the site at all, it displays the message page cannot be displayed. Any help would be appreciated . Thanks in advance.

See if you can download XP SP2

I suspect you did the in-place with either an XP or XP SP1 CD. This will restore Windows to the version on the CD you used, without any updates or upgrades. In other words, what you are seeing is perfectly normal for an in-place upgrade.

Before you can apply SP3, you must first apply SP2. See if you can download SP2 to your desktop; don't try to install it interactively. Install it, then try SP3 again. Once you get SP3 on, then try Windows Update.

Hi Palmetto,

Thanks for responding.
I used my XP home with sp2 it comes preinstalled with the CD. That's not showing up either in add/remove programs. I do have sp2 from microsofts site on cd also as a standalone. Would it be a good idea to install that?

I can't d/l anything from microsoft at all it automatically goes to a page that reads cannot be displayed. I'm installing sp2 in a few to see if that helps. Thanks for your help, I'll post back if it does work. :)

Try this

by IC-IT In reply to I Performed an in-place u ...

Start - Run
type
regsvr32 wups2.dll

There was a patch in the Fall of 2007 that conflicts with a repair operation by leaving this (and 6 other dlls) missing their registry entries.

I tried that it added it successfully but it still won't run windows update. I heard of the patch from another tech site but the link was dead and I didn't find the topic on microsoft at all. Thanks for your reply.

Ok. I installed sp2 and it still doesn't show up in add/remove and I still can't connect to windows update. I'm open to all ideas that can help me with this issue. Thanks again. :)

The solution was an easy one , go to network connections in your control panel, right click on your local settings, click properties, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select.. notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity. Then select properties for internet protocol (TCP/IP) and select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Just in case anyone else should ever have this same issue when repairing a windows installation with the XP CD and can't access windows update. Thanks for all your replies.
