Your "standard" IDE controller is part of the chip-set on the motherboard.
The chip-set is the 2 large integrated circuits mounted on the motherboard.
Intel, AMD, SiS, ALi, and Via are common chip-set manufactures.

If you have an axillary IDE controller giving y 4 different IDE connectors, that is usually a clearly marked small IC on the motherboard.
High Point and Promise are common IDE controller chips used for axillary controllers.

I suspect that your problem is NOT the IDE driver.

You either have a drive jumper setup error,
A bad hard drive,
Or a drive that was set up using a BIOS overlay program.

Another possibility is that you have a hard drive that is too large for either the motherboard or the version of Windows you are running.
