IE 5.5 opens very slowly/does not open !

By ssambasion ·
I have Windows 98 with IE 5.5. I am having problems opening the browser. It opens very very slowly or does not open at all. Also when I open the task list it shows several sessions with Internet explorer (not responding). Pl. suggest a solution to open the Internet explorer immediately when the icon is clicked. Thanks.

Your browser may ahve become corrupt when this happens.
Solution:
Open the Control Panel,double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon and then select IE,click on the Remove button,in the pop-up menu choose the repair option, reboot computer, and connect to Internet, click on help and select About IE,upgrade to 128 bit encryption and also download the latest service pack to IE.

Check your DNS settings. If the first DNS server in your list is invalid or the server is down, name resolution times out before moving to the next server on the list. If you are opening a home page with many frames (or ads), or which starts pop-up ads, this explains the several sessions you see.

Another possibility is that the home page which the browser tries to open is swamped (so busy you get very slow or no access), or points to links which are either swamped or invalid.

Things to try are listed below. If one of these solves the problem, you can then decide on a long-term solution.

1. Change your DNS list -- move the first server to the end of the list.

2. Change your browser's home page temporarily to a different (simpler) one, or even to a local file.

Good luck.
