IE 6 or IE 5.5

Having installed IE6 I decided to revert to 5.5xx only to find that my system still thinks IE6 is running – all tests show 6 but if I view help tab when browser open it show build 5.5xxx – why please?

Also IE 5.5 has the problem of opening blank browsers from links – these work fine if I copy and past short cut.
