IIS and external email

By Sue77 ·
Windows 2000 advanced server with IIS, smtp set up the remote pointing to the IP on my exchange server
Windows 2000 advanced sever with Exchange 2000.

Our website has people register and we return a confirmation email to them. the return confirmation only work internally not externally.
Externally give an error message on the script.

My web person claims I have a problem with exchange.
Do I have to make any changes on Exchange to allow external email through the web site?

You may have "allow automatic replies" deselected on your Exchange Server, and this would cause any automatically generated responses not to be delivered anywhere outside your internal Exchange organization. To find this setting, open up Exchange System Manager, double-click to open your site, double-click Global Settings, click once on Internet Message Formats. In the right pane, right-click on "Default" (or if there's a different name there, right-click on it) and click Properties. Got to the Advanced tab and you'll see checkboxes at the bottom, among which is "Allow automatic replies". If this is unchecked, put a checkmark in the box, and then test your return confirmation again and see if it works. Hope this helps!

That was checked.

I can telnet and send an email internally but when I try to send externally I get a "unable to relay" message. I have smtp remote with the email server IP address as the relay.

Any Ideas?

I believe that it is an Exchange setting. Go into your Exchange server's SMTP server properties, System Manager / Expand Organization / Administrative Groups / your site / the exchange server in question / protocols / SMTP
then open the properties page of your 'default SMTP server' if you have not created another.
In the properties dialog, go to Access / then Relay, and verify or place the IP address of the webserver in the list of computers allowed to relay through this server.
