Importing objects into MS Word

We needed to insert graphics from PowerPoint into a Word document that is size limited (1.5MB) Whenever we do this, the PPT object gets inflated. Today, the PPT graphic was 233 KB. After a trial import to a blank document, the Word doc became 1.5 MB. Testing how to overcome the problem, I have run several tests such as saving the PPT file in different formats (PNG, WMF, GIF, etc.), but the image quality degrades. MS Word Help suggests some solutions, but none are appropriate. I am using PPT and Word 2000.
