Inappropriate Discussions

By maxwell edison ·
I, for one, am glad TechRepublic removed a certain discussion, one whose title and subject matter was obviously offensive to many people. Call me a prude, I don't care. But there's a time and a place for everything, and this was certainly the wrong place for such discussion. I chimed in only to clear the name, so to speak, of Americans, in general, who were being blamed for it, and which obviously wasn't the case. Moreover, I noticed the continuance of the name-calling and flame posting in that thread, just because someone felt compelled to jump in and voice a dislike for it.

Quite frankly, I'm tired of all the nonsense, and even though I've contributed to it in the past, it's just the sort of thing that would keep me, and others, away. However, I'm resolved to make sure I don't contribute to it in the future, and I'd encourage my fellow members to do the same. These can be good discussions, as we all know, but the flavor of the discussion site has gone downhill in recent months.

TechRepublic has a great site, and we owe them the courtesy to treat it in a manner that's consistent with what they're trying to provide, and we all know what that is. TechRepublic invites us into their home, so to speak, to use as a forum for the sharing of ideas. And just as it would be unthinkable to trash someone else "real" house, it's disrespectful to trash their "cyber" house as well.

Let's do us all a big favor by cleaning up our act a little bit. We certainly owe it to our most gracious hosts, don't you agree?

I've noticed this on most of the BBSs I monitor.

by DC_GUY In reply to Inappropriate Discussions

One of them got so bad that I can no longer check it at work because the company filter started blocking it! A lot of people seem to be feeling frustrated, angry, depressed, powerless... the whole litany of negative emotions. Must have something to do with the times during which we're living.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got from an attorney was free. It's obviously a bit dated but it can be easily re-tailored to the internet era.

If you feel that you just have to write a nasty letter to someone, do it. Proof it, edit it, get it perfect. Read it over a couple of times and revel in your eloquence. Print it out. Put it in an envelope. Address it. Stamp it. Didn't that feel good? Now tear it up and throw it in the trash.

Who'd ever improve products or address service issues, and how?

You say: "I chimed in only to clear the name, so to speak, of Americans, in general, who were being blamed for it, and which obviously wasn't the case. What thread are you referring to?
What name calling and flaming are you referring to?
I haven't seen either in a few weeks. Perhaps it is a sensitivity level or maybe I missed the topic all together?

Send me an email. . . .

...and I'll explain outside the discussion forum in a return email. To do otherwise would not only be just as inappropriate, but possibly just start it up all over again.

Maxwell just as an aside

You did mention Janet Jackson it wasn't any one else here that I saw.

And for that matter it was also the American Media who seemed offended but honestly I can't see what they where complaining about as I've seen better on a male life saver at the beach here in AU and a lot better on almost any American TV show.

Was it the timing or the place that caused all the stir?

You do realize who that was that started the complaints right?

by Oz_Media In reply to Just simple questions Max

Just follow the bouncing ball and you will see it was done out of spite and won your vote if not others. The person complaining was very doubtfully who 'she' said she was.

Just like other recent posts, this was a quickly created and poorly defined alias. WIth the amount of attention you pay to the forums, I thought you would have picked up on it. Timing is everything, unfortunately that person had bad timing.

I wouldn't be too shy as to say who it probably was, make that almost definitely, make that definitely.

While your at it...

by BMN In reply to Inappropriate Discussions

Moderators: while your at it how about removing ALL off topic discussions? Isn't this a technical forum? Generally speaking I have found this forum to be one of the worst when it comes to people posting completely irrelevant topics and devoting massive amounts of time to them.

Then why don't you stay i9n the Technical or Q & A areas and leave the Misalliance discussions alone?

At least that way you could keep up with you're supposed work and not look as if you are "Goofing Off" while at work.

A good point

by Oz_Media In reply to Really

I did notice that you had particiopated in Technical discussions mainly. This tells me that you are finding some relevant info that interests you. If you do not enjoy off topic discussions it seems you have already been successful at chossing the ones you do wish to participate in.

Would the removal of off topic discussions create more technical discussions? No.

The discussions simply wouldn't be there unless a technical topic is raised, which does happen quite often, as you've proven in your participation in them.

What you could do if you want to participate on a more technical level, is to spend some time helping with Technical Questions, I noticed you haven't participated in such yet but can tell you first hand it is a nice feeling to know you are helping people with annoying problems. Many of the posts are from network admins looking for really quick answers to on the job wuestions, your technical knowledge would be invaluable to them.

If the discussions aren't what you expact to discuss, you can always start your own topic and create a discussion about something more appealing.

OR You can simply choose which discussions to participate in by choosing a specific discussion group, instead of miscellaneous.

There are lots of alternatives, and perhaps you do have other sites you prefer, but your not losing money and could be more helpful in the Q&A section if you so chose to be.

No Moderators

by TheChas In reply to While your at it...

The TR Discussion Center and Technical Q&A forums are unique in that they are NOT specifically moderated.

Yes, the TR staff does look through the threads from time to time. Mainly for ideas for articles.

The TR staff will review a thread if someone brings the thread to their attention.

I participate sporadically in other forums that are moderated, and find it to be a general pain.

Think of the "off-topic" discussions as a virtual water cooler. We spend some time here blowing off steam on topics that are important to us. Further, we appreciate the input of our peers on more than just technical issues.

Besides, under a category labeled miscellaneous, just what constitutes an "off-topic" subject?

If I am guessing correctly on the specific thread that started all of this, while a bit crude in execution, was a topic of interest on a computer related technical forum.

The base subject was the large amount of SPAM directed at males.

While a bit crude, I considered the original post to be quite humerus.
Further, the post was fully in character for the peer who started the thread.

While I was not personally offended by the postings I saw of the thread, I would not want my niece to see the thread.
