Incompatibility of NIC + Cisco 2900xl

This is driving ne NUTs!

We had a similar one a few weeks ago when I reconfigured the Cisco switch to run at 100 speed and full duplex. I reconfigured all the ports for the faster speed in hopes of speeding up the network connection. Unfortunately, there is a know issue with this Cisco 2900 xl switch that is has trouble with autosensing and needs to be hard coded. Some of the new computers where unable to communicate with the network after the upgrade, so I reset back to lower 10 speed half duplex. This solved the problem for awhile.

Last week the linksys hub started to go, the motor is running loud. I switched all connections from the linksys (which was autosensing 10/100) to the Cisco before the linsys died.

I ran into the same problem with another laptop. This is even stranger though because I can connect to Server 2 running Server 2000, the internet (which runs through old NT Server), but cannot connect to Exchange 5.5 (on old NT server). This laptop uses a docking station with a built in autosensing 10/100 NIC. When I moved the laptop to my office and tried to connect via a Linksys hub connected to the network, it works. I believe this is because the small network hub is running at 100 even though it is connected to the network which is only running at 10. Somehow it tricks the laptop and makes the connection.

I have gone to technet site and they said unless they were both set at same speed they wouldn’t work, but now they are.

Any other insights? I am now going to call Gateway and see if they have a clue about reconfiguring the docking station NIC
