Independent Project Management Consulting?

By IT-PM ·
I am an IT Project Manager with over 19yrs experience in IT. I have an undergrad in CS, an MBA, an MCDBA, a CEC, and a Comptia IT Project+ cert. I just completed a PMP course, and I plan to pass the exam next month. I am interested in becoming an independent IT project manager or management consultant, and I would like to get some advice from someone who is already working successfully as an independent in this field, preferably someone who works in the DC-Baltimore area. I need to know if there is enough work out there for independent PM?s so that I would be steadily employed, and if PM is enough ? do I need to look for work in my technical specialty as well.

I have thought about that too and i think there is defintely a market here in DC, though not necessarily just with govt. Couple of suggestions:

1) start with a temp to perm type contracting gig as a PM first to build your independent skills and resume/references and then expand outward from there.

2)I have my own company and 7 consultants if you want someone to do the backend business stuff and help you establish creditability we could talk about being "represented" by us first.

3) I have a friend who does staffing for PM positions and needs someone to work on a high-profile project asap - contact me and I can put you in touch (use my email).
