Infection: Laptop freezes about 40 min after startup

    by rhung1 ·

A few days ago, my Samsung Pentium laptop freezes about 40 min after startup and I had to turn off and then turn on power to get the desktop.

I deal with this temporarily by turning the clock backward. This “bug” isn’t sensitive to pm, am, and date. It’s sensitive only to hour, min, and sec. (For example, if startup time is 3am, turning the clock back to 11pm the previous date doesn’t help and this actually leads to freeze because the “bug” sees that 40 min has passed. However, turning the clock back to 1a.m. will keep the laptop working for 2 hours.)

What is causing this strange problem and how to fix this easily? Startup won’t help. I tried Avast virus scan, but this doesn’t help.

I am reluctant to do a system restore, one reason being my laptop has no restore point.

    Thank you for your help

That would make such a laptop over a decade old so it’s time to be sure all your files are safe on backups then try the usual. Use google and YouTube to find tutorials on how to clean the heatsinks and replace the now dried up and ineffective heatsink compound. If any fans are not working like new, replace those as well.

….knowing what make/model of laptop you are using. The more product information you can share, the better advice you will get. We don’t know how old the computer is or whether it is worth trying to fix.

Kindly run this command to fix the system corruptions that causes the freezing of your computer.

Please try the followings steps below.

      1. Windows Key + R
      2. Type CMD right click and run as administrator.
      3. Copy and paste each command below, you need to do it one at a time until
      finishes scanning.

      sfc /scannow

      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Quick note: While the command is running, it’s expected to see the process stuck at 20 or 40 percent. After a few minutes, the process will complete successfully.

Once you complete the steps, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool will connect to the Windows Update servers to download and replace any damaged files in the local image for Windows 10 as necessary.

Also, kindly minimize the running services on your computer to see if some of your third party applications cause the freezing concern.

      Press Windows key + R
      Type: msconfig then press enter
On the system configuration window go to services tab
Check hide all Microsoft services on the lower left corner of the window.
      Click disable all
      Click apply then okay.
It will ask you for restart and kindly restart your computer to apply the changes
