Information in Word deleted

I was updating a word document that I keep on my shared drive. When I closed the document the file changed to 19kb in size and when I opened it back up all of my information is missing. I ran a scan for viruses trojans and spyware/adware. I am in the process of removing the normal.dot file and having word recreate it. Can anyone tell me what causes this problem?
