Go to the VBA Editor. In the Project Explorer, select "ThisWorkbook". Double click and copy in this piece of code:

Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave _
(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)

ActiveSheet.PageSetup.LeftFooter = " - Saved - " & Date
End Sub

Each time the workbook is saved today's date will be automatically added to the Left Footer.
Excel's ActiveWorkbook.BuiltinDocumentProperties is a bit flakey. It doesn't work as well as Word.

That code- again - is

"Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave _
(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)

ActiveSheet.PageSetup.LeftFooter = " - Saved - " & Date
End Sub"

Without the quotes
