Install of NT and 98 - It's a tough one

By ideafixer ·
I have win 98 on a FAT 32-file system. I have partitioned my hard drive using partition magic to take the free space on my hard drive and separate it.

I use WINNT installation partition method to make a NTFS area of the hard drive to install WinNT Server 4.0.

I know fat32 and NFTS are unaware of each other so I installed boot magic for the purpose of using the two operating systems. So far I have:

Created the partition, installed WinNT Server 4.0 (halfway), THEN after the installation process asks for the first CD and loads the CDs files the installation process reboots the system. When the system comes back up the NT installation is suppose to continue.

Unfortunately, when the computer comes back up it loads 98 since FAT32 and NTFS do not recognize each other. Even when I added the WinNT operating system to the boot magic menu it did not work. The option for NT was there but the system hung when I selected it.

What can I do to get my system to boot back into the WinNT Installation process so I can complete it? HELP HELP

Well I don't have a complete answer here, but some things to consider. For the purpose of first booting the computer it doesn't matter if it is FAT32 or NTFS. The boot sector of your harddrive contains the information. I would recommend using theNT Boot loader for a duel boot between NT and 98, it works pretty well. Also I'm not sure of the size of your drive or of the partition locations, so this may or may not apply. NT can't be installed past the 1024 cylinder if you are installing NT on the last part of the drive you may run into problems.

The reason it's booting to 98 is that the NTFS partition isn't set for active.

If I'm reading this right...At this point, you should be able to use fdisk (or partition magic again) to just to set the active partiion to the NTFS partition insteaof the fat32 partition. If it hangs again, I would suggest drumping the bootmagic.

If you were to do this again, you probobly just want to use partition magic to shrink your fat partition down and then let NT setup create and format the NTFS partition for you. This should automatically set that partition to active and also create your boot.ini correctly for booting between 98 and NT.

Good luck to you

Mark

The FAT32 partition is set as the active partition. NT doesn't know it is there, so it can't modify the boot record to allow dual-boot. You will have to format your system partition with Fat16, reinstall Win98, and then run Winnt setup from within 98 (best practice). Sorry.

regards my last comment, forget about the boot record bit. I was just thinking about the arc naming conventions... but I would still recommend backup, format using a DOS boot disk, and the rest as I said, if dual-booting is to work properly. I have also found that partition resizers etc can do more harm than good. Be aware.

copy your boot.ini to a floppy, after you do this go in and edit the boot.ini on your floppy. set it to boot to your second partition where you are loading nt. when you start to reboot during setup throw in the floppy it will point it to your nt partition.
