Installation of NT on a Win98 Machine.

By Bullheaded ·
I would like to install NT on my Win98 Machine, but have run into the FAT32 problem. If I install NT onto a second hard drive, would that solve the problem?

Hi, you could do that, or you could purchase parition magic which will allow you to convert the fat32 volume to fat16. This utility will also allow you to make partition changes on the fly for either operating system,if you choose to do so. You can read about it at www.powerquest.com. Version 5 is the latest which would be necessary if you ever intended to install win2k, or, if not, I've seen this utility on the auction block many times at www.egghead.com (look in auctions section). Hope this helps.

First bootable partation must be FAT for dual boot (Windows 95/98 and NT).

NT copies its startup files on active primary partation and NT can't read a FAT32 partation so it is even not possible to install NT on a second HD having FAT16 or NTFS.
You can convert FAT32 partaion to FAT16 by using some utilities or by FDISK utility, but you have to re-install Win98.

You will DEFINITELY need FAT (FAT16) on your boot partition. NT puts the boot.ini (as well as a few other files) on the boot partition to be read during startup. As a result, it will not work if the boot partition is FAT32. However, before you gorunning FDISK and reloading Win98, I would invest $60 or $70 for Partition Magic and use it to convert the boot partition from FAT32 to FAT16.
