Installing 2nd NT on Dell PwrEdge 4300

By adriansu ·
I am in the process of installing NT on the E drive (1.5gb) of a Dell PowerEdge 4300 with an American Megatrends Perc controller. Reason for this is that I have installed a second processor and want to upgrade first NT instance to multi-processor.
Problem is as follows:
1) I start NT CD and select F6 to bypass the auto-selection, I then put in the driver diskette for the Perc controller and add the drivers.

2) I then proceed with installing the new instance of NT. I am allowed to select the E drive as the target and compelte an NTFS format.

3) After formatting the drive, the NT install goes back to the driver diskette but fails to read it the second time saying I have a problem with the disk or CD-ROM.

I have tried several diskettes and even downloaded the latest drivers without sucess.

Anyone see this problem before or have any ideas?.

How about trying uptomp.exe from the resource kit?

Too risky, better to have 2 NT installations and if the first one becomes corrupt I can boot from the second and do a recovery.

I remember that Dell servers required you to use their driver disk for the SCSI card or array controller. You have to hit F5 (or is it F6...there is no prompt) during the initial hardware detection phase of setup (when its looking for the controller cards).

Basically the NT kernel is incapable of detecting the Dell controllers.

I've been through this a few times so I know this is close if not dead on. Call Dell support, they ought to know exactly what this is.

Then do you have a backup? Install your drive E as the sole hard disk, do a basic NT install, install the backup software and restore the tape. Then do the uptomp.exe upgrade. You will still have your original disk if something goes wrong.
