Installing 3com/US Robotics Modem

Hi

I have just brought a new windows 2000 system and i am trying to install the above modem on it, However when i connect the modem up to the system and start up the CPU it doensnt find this new modem i.e. no “new hardware found wizard” however it does install a modem without any user feedback. Shows up in control panel displayed as a “standard modem”. When i try to connect to anything using this modem it does not work. The system installs this standard modem on COM1.
If i manually add my modem and set it to use COM1 and remove this standard modem my own Modem works Perfectly.
The problem being is that when i shut down the pc and restart it, it again installs this “standard Modem”, and i am back to square one my own modem not working, i guess due to a conflict on the com ports.

Why does it keep finding my modem as a standard modem and not what it actually is?

How can i stop the system from doing this ?

Instead of removing/replacing the pnp installed modem, update the drivers. This can be done by right clicking on the “standard modem” in the device manager and choosing properties. Then click the driver tab and the “update driver” button. Update using the drivers off the included media.

This has often worked with USR modems in my experience.
