compatibility

by rcoleman In reply to Installing NT4

When I switched from 95 to NT4 it was a lot more involved than you might think. Because 95 is plug and play and NT4 isn't I had to replace several things that were not compatible. Can't rememeber everyting, but there were several pieces of hardware and some software that were not NT compatible. The suggested method is to unhook everything but the min. needed to install NT and after the OS is in the box, reattach your hardware one at a time until you run into a problem. That goes for softwaretoo but in that case it is a lot easier, just look on the disc or documentation. Of course the same could be said for the hardware but sometimes there is a conflict because two plug and play devices want the same resources. I know I had to replacemy modeum with jumpers that would dictate what resources it wanted to use.

Good luck, and don't try this unless you have a good system for backing things up! Usually you can go back to the "last known good hardware profile" in the boot up process it you end up with a hung boot...
