What method might be used to install a SQL6.5 database dump or backup to a SQL7.0 server?

I dont thing you you can import a backup file directly.

But if you still have 6.5 available then you can do a DTS export from 6.5 to 7.0 or use the SQL upgrade wizard and named pipes.

However, If you have the backup on a tape device then you can use the SQL upgrade wizard.

The SQL6.5 server will not be available for a DTS job, hence the need to install a copy of the database directly to the SQL7.0 server. Checking the wizards, I am unable to locate any reference to "upgrading". Is that function not normally installed? Would I find it on the CD?

You can?t install a dump from 6.5 into 7.0.

You have to insert it into a SQL-server 6.5 and for example use Access to import the table to a db in Access and then use teh DTS to import it into your SQL.

I?m not aware of any utilities that reads dumpfiles but I suppose thy exists.

Hope this helps!

Jesper, I apologize for taking so long to update my question and it's responses. I checked with MS support and they confirmed what you knew - the only way to get data from 6.5 to 7.0 is to have both servers up and running while using DTS. I am going to withdraw the question. - Tom
