instant messenger crossplatform

By Sue T ·
Does anyone know of an instant messenger program that will work with both Mac and PC? The macs are running OSX and the pcs XPsp2. We want to keep this in house within our own network. iChat works for the Macs but not for the PCs. Is there something that will see and be able to messenger other computers inside our network and hopefully not have to run through any of our servers. the boss wants something that works basically like iChat does.
Thank you.

Have you tried out meebo.com? Maybe it will work, if you use any yahoo, hotmail, icq, aol, google logins. Or you can set up your own IM service/server; it is very easy and tiny, just look for meebome.

Good luck

Thank you for taking the time to answer. Unfortunately, meebome requires you to login on their server and this won't work for us. We use a proxy server and these sites are normally blocked. iChat does not require you to log on to any server so I am guessing it is using something along the lines of Apple Talk and that is the setup the boss wants to see with the PCs also. He is very pro Apple and anti PC so I really hate to tell him it can't be done. Do you have any other suggestions?

Check out GAIM. I've used it in Linux, and it is very cross platform friendly:

Hey Sue,

Check out these shareware LAN messaging programs:

http://www.programurl.com/snaptalk.htm

http://www.sharewareconnection.com/akeni-lan-messenger.htm

The only 2 I could find that are cross platform.

Thank you. I have checked out both programs you pointed me to. akeni seems to be for linux and windows but snaptalk fits the bill. The price isn't bad at all for it so the boss is actually considering it. I really appreciate you going the extra miles and tracking down these programs. Have a great day.
