It sounds like your normal.dot file is corrupt. Do a search for normal.dot (make sure show all files is turned on) and rename the file (s) that it finds. Reboot and word should run.

Other potential problems:

Insufficient free hard drive space for the swap / paging file.

I would want to have at least 750MB of free hard drive space.

Too many programs running in the background.
Every icon in the system tray equals resources that are being used.

Disable as many programs that run at startup as practical.

You might want to run either:
Spybot Search and Destroy (download.com)
or
AdAware (www.lavasoft.de)
to find and remove spy-ware and ad-ware from your system.
