Intel GM965_ 6.14.0010.5029 graphics driver caused WMP plugin to fail.

Intel GM965_ 6.14.0010.5029 graphics driver has caused Windows Media Player browser plugin to fail, and internet explorer to cease connecting on http port 80. Firefox ok.

After updating my graphics driver to the Intel GM965 6.14.0010.5029 driver; the Windows Media Player browser plugin screen turned green filtered during playback. I appeared to be able to roll back the driver which resolved the issue, however this intermittently came back.

After a week or so and a possible unknown origin virus infection, which caused the windows security centre red shield logo to duplicate itself multiple times in the system tray, the Windows Media Player browser plugin shows no video, or audio. I tried to re-installed the above driver, but the issues remained.
Also internet explorer now does not appear to be connecting via http, but is via https, and (passive) FTP.

Has anyone heard of anything like this?

you need to take care of that first. What are you using for an antivirus tool? When was your last update and scan?<br>
You should back up any data that you don't want to lose because either the virus or disinfecting your computer can make it so that Windows won't boot. <br>

Hi there,

I'm using Avira AntiVir Personal Free - I did a complete scan just a moment ago.
It's odd, the update utility has sometimes recently not connected. I'm not sure if that's related. Because of that though I could only get it to update 3 days ago.

Download Malwarebytes from the link below. It's free.

You should be able to download it and updates without problems. Once you install all of the updates restart your computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key after the single POST beep when you restart. You'll see a range of choices, pick Safe Mode. <br>
Once Windows finishes booting into Safe Mode go to the Malwarebytes program and run a Full scan, not a quick scan. <br>
The reason behind scanning in Safe Mode is that it's less likely that an active malware program will load as Safe Mode only loads the minimum programs and drivers for running Windows. You can't browse while in Safe Mode. You'll have to wait. <br>
Once a complete scan is finished allow Malwarebytes to fix any problems and reboot normally. <br>
Make sure that a virus isn't helping to cause the problem. Then, hopefully, we can fix it.

My thinking is that it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend time fixing something if there's a virus that may hose the system.<br>
One of the first things I do when I work on a computer that I don't know about is to run several virus scans in their entirety. If they come up 100% clean then I go about fixing the problem. You mentioned the possibility of a virus. Until you can successfully complete at least one full scan, in Safe Mode, with a good tool like Malwarebytes, what's the point in fixing it?

MalwareBytes isn't updating. .

Interestingly, before and after re-installation, MalwareBytes isn't updating, and is throwing an error code of 732 (12029, 0). The last database version is from the 7th Jan.

The overriding issue appears to be that Internet Explorer, and all related applications (possibly MalwareBytes too(?)) appear to be being blocked on http port 80. The strange thing is that this seems to be the case even after disabling the router and the Windows firewall. It's only MS related as I can browse fine on Firefox (apart from the Windows Media Player plugin), it's just IE and the plugin that won't connect via http, but will via https(!).

You should, to semi-rule out an infection of some kind. Get that done. <br>
I'm still looking for an answer. <br>
Since you've just reinstalled IE8 I'm assuming that you haven't tinkered with the settings. Let's double-check a few basics. <br>
Open IE8, go to Tools\Internet Options and the Security tab. Click the button that says, "Reset all zones to default level." <br>
Go to the Advanced tab, click "Restore advanced settings". <br>
I don't know how your connection is setup, if you use a proxy server. If not, under the Connection tab\LAN Settings see that the Automatically detect settings box is checked.<br>
Close the Internet options window. <br>
Go to Tools\Manage Add-ons\Toolbars and Extensions. Disable everything in there. You can re-enable it later. To give you an idea, all I have enabled in my IE8 is Java Plug-in 2 SSV helper.<br>
Exit Manage Add-ons. <br>
I don't think any of that is going to fix the problem but at least I'll know what you're starting with. <br>
Do your scan, man! I'll see if I can come up with a fix for you. <br>
Let me know if you have something you can't identify in Toolbars and Extensions.

Something that I should've thought of sooner... If you have System Restore turned on you may be able to go to a restore point that dates before you had your problem.<br>
Go to Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore. <br>
Choose a date prior to your issues and restore. <br>
I suspect it won't work due to removing and reinstalling IE8 but it might. It won't hurt anything to try it.<br>
You might try to remember trying System Restore in the future. Good luck with that. I forgot it was there.
