Intermitent Loss of Network Connection i

By tonydelcampo ·
I am having an ongoing intermitent problem on a few computers running Windows XP Professional.

The computers in question ( Dell 4400s ) seem to have trouble "seeing" other computers on our peer to peer network.

Only the XP machines exhibit this behavior.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Is there a server at all on the network? What are the OS versions of the other machines? How are the IP addresses distributed? All of these may be areas where there could be a problem. XP uses DNS to resolve machine names not NETBIOS. If you have not installed the NETBIOS protocal you may solve your problem that way. Otherwise I would look to (if possible based on addressing scheme) hard code the machines into the DNS hosts table on each XP machine.

What computers are you running on your network?
If they are NT, 98, 95, you're probably missing the NetBeui protocol. You'll have to install it on your XP machines from the windows XP CD. Check out microsoft's website for the path.
