Internet connection thru a cell phone

I recently switched from a dial up account to using sprintpcs and a cell phone to connect to the internet. I expected to get a higher data transfer rate but got half the speed of a land line. Does anyone have any experince with using a cell phone connected to computer with a data cable to connect to the internet?
