Internet Explorer 6 not responding

when I am ready to shut down my computer, useing windows ME, my Internet Explore is not responding, and the computer will not shut down. By the time it comes to the actual shut down, it stops, and you can’t do anything except push the power button off on the tower. How can I stop the not responding ?
