Internet Explorer Errors

By ljackson.desoto ·
I have been having trouble with internet explorer. I was on 5.0 and it lost it's tool bar and would not browse to some pages. I finally got the toolbar back, but it still will go to some pages and say done, but there is no info on the page. I don't even get the page not available message. I upgraded to ie 6.00 and I am still not able to view some pages. I also cannot right click or download files anymore since the upgrade (if I try to download, it opens up a browser screen with what looks like gibberish. I also cannot open add-remove programs to uninstall. I get an error message that says mshta.exe has generated and error and then closes. I am running windows 2k professional. Help!

Try this:

1. Open a CMD prompt and type:

SFC /PURGECACHE
SFC /SCANNOW

I tried to do the SFC/PURGECACHE, but it keeps asking for the installation disk. I put it in and cancelled the autostart installation, but it doesn't seem to recognize the disk. I get a windows protection error saying that some files need to be copied to the dll cache, but it won't recognize the disk. I couldn't do a print screen to capture the exact message.

1. Check your security settings in Internet Options. This may be a large part of your problem. Try lowering them. You might also open a DOS window and ping the website you are trying to reach. That will show if you are really getting there when nothing displays.

I currently have the security settings set at the defaults which is medium. I did go in and change down to the lowest and it did not help. When I went back in to change back, they were still at the same level so I am not sure if it is even allowing me to change the levels. Also, how do you ping the site. I have heard of this, but do not know how to do it.

Make sure you have Admin rights to change your IE settings. Incorrect settings will give you an error when trying to download. To check the path to the site and see the status, best way is to open a DOS window and then issue the following command: Tracert www.yahoo.com (Just substitute your destination URL for the sample I put in). You can also put in the IP address. You will see the path your request takes and how long it takes. In Netscape, I believe you can also issue a CTRL+H to seea status when opening a site......
