I’m not very familiar with Exchange and am having trouble getting SMTP mail working properly.
Server: WIndows NT SP6
Clients: Combo of XP Pro and Win 98, all use MS/Outlook as e-mail client
Internet Mail: Verizon (no domain, e.g., an user’s e-mail address is rick.stainless@verizon.net)
All internal mailboxes work fine. I have an Internet Mail service set up on each client with POP3 and SMTP servers configured with the names that Verizon provided.
However, I cannot get outbound SMTP mail to pass without having the Exchange Internet Mail Service running, which I’m told should not be the case if I’m using a “pure” POP3 account at an external provider.
I also noticed that when an e-mail bounces from AOL, it shows the connecting IP as the server’s external IP address. It should be Verizon’s mail server, no?
What do I have misconfigured on wither the clients or Exchange to allow SMTP mail to pass outbound without having the Internet Mail Service running?
