Internet sharing via router question
Lockedby rwtattoo · about 22 years, 8 months ago
We set up a home network using a router, and are using a cable modem, as well as Win98 (the original edition, not SE)and are having problems getting the second computer to access the internet. Every time you attempt it, you get a “socket not connected” error. The network is working fine, and I can ping the router from the second computer and the ping works fine back and forth from the router. But try to get online and you get nowhere!
I have a feeling its a setting or config problem but haven’t been able to find anything yet. Any help would be appreciated!Topic is locked -

Could be that some of the networking files are corrupted. remove all components out of the network properties, reboot and reload them again. That should replace the corrupted files

When you say “the ping works fine back and forth from the router” do you mean within your own network? Does the first machine get online with no problems? Can you access the router configuration program from the second machine and see if it is actually making the external connection? (This will depend on then router you are using and the configuration program it uses).

Yes, the first machine was getting online with no problems. And they were both configured the same. When you ran winipcfg they were both showing the same thing as well….
Read on to find out how we got the second one online!
Its still not perfect, but for now its working!

PING means only that the cable and tcp/ip can “SEE” the machine, it does not mean that communications are possible. Do not rely on ping.
You need a crash course in Netbios(microsoft/IBM) networking, and it is available here:

Thanks for the great link!
We did work this one out on our own. Disabled Wingate and now its working without errors directly through the router.

What network protocols are you using
The easies way I have found is use TCP/IP and give each PC a IP address. Make sure each PC has your ISP’s DNS setting in the networking section.
Hope this helps you. If not getback with more info.

Network protocols are TCP/IP& NetBeui.
We had thought maybe it had something to do with the cable provider. Sometimes you have to let them know you have a router to get their numbers to jive with yours… but it wasn’t…

Ok, here’s what we have so far…
These two systems (and one other) were set up on a phone line network for the past 3 years. The first system was originally used as the “server”, using Wingate as the go-between. So the first one was already first in line to the cable modem. Adding the router in between didn’t do any harm, and the first one still worked fine.
Now for the second one… We tried everything.. no one could figure it out, and then I gave up and let my fiance mess with it a while. I finally said, just reinstall Wingate and see if we can proxy it and at least it might work.
Well, now it does access the internet.. BUT.. when you bring up any net based program you get a “Wingate server not found” error.. you click ok, and then it connects!? Wingate is not actively running either so now I have no idea how its doing what its doing! -

I’m new to this area, so bear with me. I hope this helps.
Sounds like it’s still looking to connect through your proxy server instead of the router. I’d make sure that Wingate is completely off the first computer.
If it’s just one of those broadband routers you pick up at the Best Buy, let it take care of everything for you. Double-check your DNS settings especially; this is where I got tripped up initially. Make sure your PCs are set for DHCP and that they have no DNS settings. Yourrouter should take care of all of this.
Hope this applies…
