Intrusion Detection Software

If one of the main reasons for security software is data stolen (i.e. credit cards), then why would someone invest in a single solution like TripWire which only handles intrusion detection? I am assuming intrusion detection software could not prevent/ stop or fix data from being stolen.

  Such softwares are useful in checking the vulnerability of the link/network. After u know that the link is vulnerabe to intrusion, u can take measures like encryption.
